Meet the Author

Herm Zandman is a former teacher and writer of educational materials who became an interstate trucker.  He grew up in the Netherlands, in a rural area close to the German border, and currently lives in Kongorong, Australia. Dr. Zandman is working on a children's book, called It's Not a Truck! It's a B-Double! which narrates what the big trucks do, where they travel, and what makes them so special.

When Herm Zandman decided to “switch gears” from teaching high school to hauling cargo across Australia, little did he know of the humorous adventures and startling encounters that lay waiting down the open road. In Blood Sweat and Gears, Herm offers an informative and heartfelt glimpse into the little-known world of interstate truckers.

The story takes the reader through the human challenges that interstate trucking imposes on drivers as well as their families. The relationship between heavy haulage and general road users is highlighted, with many entertaining antidotes offered about trucks sharing the road with cars.  Zandman explains the importance of good communication between the transport industry and authorities.  His experiences with the police and inspectors regarding documentation, routes, and life on the road in general are truly an often harrowing, sometimes funny, and always compelling “ride” for the reader. 

Blood, Sweat and Gears sheds light on a largely unknown part of society in order to engender helpful understanding and better harmony when the behemoths of the road meet the road’s little users.

This book is print-on-demand – the books are printed when they are ordered. Please allow for both PRINTING and SHIPPING time when ordering. In the continental US and Canada please allow approximately 2 weeks for your order to arrive – Alaska and Hawaii may take an additional week. Orders for the UK and Europe please allow 2 to 3 weeks for your order to arrive. All other international orders may take up to 10 weeks for delivery. Note it is possible for the order to arrive earlier or later than the time frames given depending on the order destination.
