Kelly Lin Roncace’s Lilian
Finch: Her Maiden Voyage spins a delightful twist on the
fantasy pirate genre.
In the early 1900s, women
often died during childbirth. Lilian Finch’s mother died giving
birth to her, and she and her father, Henry “Dead Eye” Finch,
carried a secret from that tragic day.
Lilian’s life was vastly
different than most little girls in her Caribbean home. Her
father was a pirate in the small fishing village and legend
dictated it was bad luck to have a female aboard ship. The only
alternative for Henry and Lilian was to hide her identity; as
far as anyone ever knew, Lilian was a boy.
But little girls grow up and
as Lilian matured, she longed to have her true identity
revealed. Her father loved her fiercely, but explained to her
that it was for her and her family’s best interest to keep the
secret.
The day comes when Henry
decides it’s time to take his daughter on her first voyage.
They, along with their band of buccaneers, run into a band of
enemy pirates. A kidnapping and dangerous ambush threaten to
destroy everything they’ve ever had and expose Lilian’s
identity.
Will the voyage prove to be
her salvation or her demise? Or is Lilian doomed to a life of
secrecy?
Kelly Lin
Roncace creates a strong and spunky female protagonist
that young women will love and admire. Her wonderfully
inventive tale will have young readers dreaming of a life filled
with adventure!
