On Sept 11, 2001, as the United States is attacked by
terrorists, an internationally renowned transplant cardiologist
delivers the keynote address at a Paris symposium. As Dr. Dan Ulek
hears of the unfolding events that have turned the world upside
down, his thoughts drift to his wife, family, and colleagues back
home in Cleveland.
Racing to
Pittsburgh is a work of fiction
based on the true story of Dan’s son Michael, a survivor of acute
leukemia. In dealing with Michael’s near-death experience, a series
of professional setbacks, and his own serious illness, Dan sees his
problems in a different light after 9/11, pondering the academic
ambition that has pitted him against colleagues and sent him racing
around the world seeking international fame. Ultimately, he
rediscovers the meaning of friendship, of survival, of being a
doctor, and of being true to one’s heart.
Racing to
Pittsburgh is a medical drama
dealing with transplantation. It is also a family saga of interest
to those who have personally or vicariously dealt with a
life-threatening illness.
