The Journal of an Unknown
Knight is based on
true events and is the riveting political memoir of author and
journalist Jose Alejandrino, who served as Presidential
Assistant for Economic Affairs with the rank of Assistant
Secretary of State in the administration of Philippine President
Fidel V. Ramos.
The memoir begins during the
Japanese Occupation in 1944, the year he was born, in the
Philippines.
Alejandrino left the Philippines when he was seven years old and
traveled extensively. The son of a diplomat, he lived in
Thailand, Spain, England, Pakistan, France, and the United
States.
The reader
is invited into the world of a young man dealing with the
excitement of living in different places and of being schooled
in some of the best educational institutions in the world, like
Sevenoaks School in England, the American College in Paris, and
Columbia University in New York. Alejandrino's father was the
Ambassador to Pakistan, France, and Italy.
After
college, Alejandrino went to work for Shell-France and the
United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural
Organization, before returning to the Philippines where he
became immersed in a web of political activities, starting with
the overthrow of the dictator, Ferdinand Marcos, the restoration
of democracy under Cory Aquino, and the reform-driven presidency
of Fidel Ramos.
His book
not only gives a fascinating insight into a world that few of us
know or can imagine, but interweaves his own personal journey of
his belief in God - a cathartic experience similar to a knight
seeking the Holy Grail - fulfilling his obligations, fighting
good battles and remaining true to himself, despite the corrupt
world of business and the dark side of politics.
About the Author

Alejandrino published his first book in 1981. As a journalist
with the Manila Chronicle, he wrote a column called
Rosebud. He would have written The Journal of an Unknown
Knight long ago had he not promised Philippine President
Ramos that he would not reveal certain things that happened
prior to and during the Ramos presidency so as not to
destabilize the Ramos government. With Ramos out of office, he
decided to finally tell the story of what went on behind the
scenes that led the country to the state in which it finds
itself today. The author is a born-again Christian and a member
of Calvary Chapel.
