Bonny Wallace writes a supernatural story, The Raymond Wilkins Adventures, which young readers will gobble up in one sitting. 

There’s something very strange going in the small rural community where the Cane’s farm lies and eleven-year-old Raymond Wilkins is about to be put right in the middle of it. 

Raymond is glad to be finished with another year of school and excited about visiting his distant relatives, Mr. and Mrs. Cane, in the country.  Fresh air, wide open spaces and new adventures await, or so Raymond believes when he first arrives. 

Raymond notices that the Canes are rather odd and guarded, a quiet sort, but he shrugs it off to country living and hard work in the fields. Indeed, the Canes’ fields contain all the usual things of a large garden; vegetables galore and a lone scarecrow.   

During a moonlit night, Raymond can’t believe his eyes; the scarecrow comes to life! Introducing himself as Flabby Johnstone, he asks Raymond to help him find out why he’s in the state he’s in. The two become fast friends and begin looking for clues when they stumble upon an odd occurrence. A young girl, Savannah, is bound by the branches of magical trees.  Raymond and Flabby manage to rescue her and a trio of sleuths/friends is instantly formed.   

Meanwhile, Mr. and Mrs. Cane begin acting even stranger; sinister, in fact, and the three find themselves in grave danger. One of them will suffer a frightening fate, but the two that remain are determined to make sure justice is served.             

Wallace’s wicked whodunit, filled with scary suspense, introduces unforgettable characters that youngsters will adore and look forward to seeing again in future sequels.
