Meet the Author



Author Alecia Houston wishes everyone could have the pleasure of spending one day with Gabby. The author is a singer-songwriter and raises funds for animal rescue. She lives with her husband and son in Columbus, Ohio. Houston is writing a sequel. The book’s artist, Lauren Luna, is also from Columbus. Her work has gained national recognition with showings in major galleries

A Bird in the Hand

This delightful children’s book is the true story of Gabriel, or Gabby Cockatoo, and what he has meant to the author.

“He does not allow me to get down on myself. He truly changed my life in remarkable ways. People do not realize how the comfort and support of an animal of any kind that you love can enrich your life!” says Alecia Houston.

Due to an illness, Alecia was left unable to work. “I became very depressed having to stay home all the time. Then in December 2008, my life truly changed when I discovered eggs my pair of Umbrella Cockatoos of 14 years had laid! We actually watched Gabby hatch out of his egg!”

Gabby was hand-raised from day one, and Alecia found that she could not stop smiling every time she saw him.

Gabby loves to talk and he plays with toys just like a human child. He loves children and is gentle and cuddly. He also takes a nap with his own special blanket every day, laying his head down on a pillow and snuggling under the covers like a child. Gabby marches up and down the hallway and climbs up on the bed crying “mama” until he gets his way!

Children will love reading about Gabby’s antics and will be charmed by his tricks. He steals the hearts of everyone he meets.

This book is print-on-demand – the books are printed when they are ordered. Please allow for both PRINTING and SHIPPING time when ordering. In the continental US and Canada please allow approximately 2 weeks for your order to arrive – Alaska and Hawaii may take an additional week. Orders for the UK and Europe please allow 2 to 3 weeks for your order to arrive. All other international orders may take up to 10 weeks for delivery. Note it is possible for the order to arrive earlier or later than the time frames given depending on the order destination.
