Although we
purport to live in a society that is more progressive than ever,
our world still teems with the prejudice and racism that has
existed for generations.
Author Linnette
James- Sow never experienced this discrimination first-hand
until she married her husband, a Muslim. Having grown up in a
devout Christian household, Sow was taught that her religion
dictated that everyone should be non-judgmental of their fellow
human beings, no matter their ethnic background, race, or
religion. So it came as a surprise to her when the mention of
her Muslim husband was met with shock and discriminatory hatred,
often at the hands of the very people who also live by her
Christian faith.
Sow grew to
believe that this mutual prejudice stems not from hatred but
from fear, and is exacerbated not by the beliefs of the
majority, but by the atrocities of a small minority. As she
learned more about the Muslim faith, she learned that the two
beliefs were not as different as both sides seemed to believe,
and she believes that this ignorance adds to the cavernous
divide.
It is in this
spirit that Linnette James-Sow brings us her story, in the hopes
that her knowledge and experiences can help bridge the gap
between two similar, but often misunderstood, faiths.
